Police Seize Illicit Ganja from Remote Sagardweep’s 17 Family Village in North Andaman Region

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police officers from PS Diglipur raided the house of one Sanjib Mondal, a resident of Sagardweep’s 17 Family Village, on the afternoon of December 23, 2024. The raid, which was carried out under the direction of Mr. Ankesh Yadav, DANIPS, SDPO (Diglipur), led to the recovery of illicit ganja from the premises.

According to the FIR, a credible source had informed authorities that Mondal, aged 24, was in possession of a large quantity of illicit ganja. Following the receipt of the information, a special raiding team was formed, including Inspr. Vijay Kumar, SHO of PS Diglipur, SI Abdul Shakil, HC Sanjit Madhu, PC Bijoy Sarkar, PC Susen Das, PC Yasir Arafath, PC Neela Kumari and PC Soma Dey.

The team, equipped with necessary investigation kits, a digital weighing machine, and other materials, traveled to Sagardweep by police boat, reaching the police outpost at around 2:30 PM. After securing the presence of two independent witnesses, the team proceeded to Mondal’s residence.

Upon arrival, the team identified Mondal, who was informed of his legal rights under the NDPS Act, including the option to conduct a personal search of the raiding team and witnesses. A subsequent search of his house revealed two polythene bags containing illicit ganja, which was found concealed inside a temporary shed used for storing firewood.

The recovered substances were weighed and found to total approximately 135 grams of ganja, alongside 118 grams of ganja stems and branches. The contraband was sealed on-site and seized in the presence of the independent witnesses. The items were then taken into police custody for further processing.

Mondal, who was detained for questioning was later served notice under section 35(3) of BNSS.  Mondal is facing charges under Section 20(b)(ii)A of the NDPS Act, 1985.
