In accordance with regulation 18(2) of the A&N Island (Municipal) Regulation, 1994, and the corresponding guidelines, the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) had initiated the process for the election of members to its Sub-Committees. The notice of election, issued on 7th May 2024, paved the way for this democratic exercise.
Nomination submissions for the five Sub-Committees under the Port Blair Municipal Council concluded on 9th May 2024, within the stipulated timeframe.
In a special meeting convened on May 10th at the Conference Hall of PBMC, members gathered for the crucial task of electing representatives to the Sub-Committees, employing the single transferable vote system. Subsequently, the elected members proceeded to appoint the Chairpersons for their respective Sub-Committees.
The final results of the elections to the Sub-Committees are as follows:
1. Sub-Committee for Education & Social Justice (ESJ): Chairperson: Y. Joga Rao; Members: Shahul Hameed, Amar Devi, A. Selvi Rani, and Abdul Islam.
2. Sub-Committee for Finance, Taxation, and Accounts (FTA): Chairperson: T. Mangayarkarasi; Members: Rajesh Ram, Ramzan Ali, Azizur Rahman, and Amar Devi.
3. Sub-Committee for Public Health and Sanitation (PH&S): Chairperson: Sanjeev Reddy; Members: C. Karunanidhi, V. Vetrivelu, R. Someshwar Rao, and Laxmi Ganeshan.
4. Sub-Committee for Water Works: Chairperson: Vasantha; Members: Rajesh Pal Govind, Laxmi Ganeshan, S. Selvi, and Abdul Islam.
5. Sub-Committee for Works, Town Planning & Improvement (WTP&I): Chairperson: D. Radhika; Members: Azizur Rahman, Abdul Islam, Rajesh Pal Govind, and V. Veterivelu.
With the election of members and appointment of Chairpersons to Sub-Committees, the Port Blair Municipal Council moves forward with its commitment to efficient governance and service delivery to the citizens of Port Blair.
