Sri Vijaya Puram, 30 July 2025
The Electricity Department of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration has announced a significant power shortage of 8–10 MW affecting Sri Vijaya Puram and adjoining areas in South Andaman. This shortage is attributed to the recent shutdown of the 5 MW NVVN power plant at Chatham to make way for the installation of a new 10 MW power plant at the same location. The ongoing deficit adds to the existing shortfall of 3–4 MW in the region.
In light of the worsening power situation, the department has issued a public appeal requesting all residents, commercial establishments, government offices, hotels, and industrial units to cooperate in conserving electricity—especially during peak evening hours from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
The department has specifically requested:
– Commercial establishments to switch off air conditioning systems during peak hours.
– Hotels to operate their diesel generator (DG) sets to reduce the load on the grid.
- Industrial units to suspend operations from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
The Electricity Department expressed hope that with public cooperation, the impact of the crisis can be mitigated to some extent while the infrastructure upgrade is underway. (Story Based on PR)
