Prahlad Singh, Pradhan, Laxmi Nagar Gram Panchayat recently met Mr. Akash Mitra, Chief Manager, Canara Bank – II (during his visit recent visit to Campbell Bay) and requested him to install an ATM at the remote village of Gandhi Nagar in Great Nicobar Island.
Gandhi Nagar Village is located 30 km from the Main Bazaar of Campbell Bay and the residents of Gandhi Nagar Village and nearby villages such as Shastri Nagar and Laxmi Nagar face a lot of difficulties in getting cash.
Several pensioners reside in Gandhi Nagar and nearby villages and due to their old age, they are unable to travel frequently to Campbell Bay (30+ Km) to get cash.
Mr. Prahlad Singh informed that due to the scarce public transport it becomes even more difficult for the residents of the remote villages to reach Campbell Bay for a reason as meagre as getting cash.
Mr. Prahlad Singh also offered building space to Canara Bank for installing an ATM at Gandhi Nagar, subject to the approval of the competent authority.
Canara Bank is the lone Nationalised Bank operating a branch at Great Nicobar Island. The residents of Laxmi Nagar Panchayat have been demanding that an ATM be installed at Gandhi Nagar Village for the convenience of the pensioners and well as the general population.
