As part of the pre-event activities for the First Island Bird Festival–2026, the Department of Environment and Forests organized a series of outreach programmes for school students on February 4 and 5, 2026. The initiatives were conducted by the Nicobar Forest Division in coordination with the Andaman Avian Club at the Coast Guard Public School and the Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Campbell Bay.

At the Coast Guard Public School, a “Build a Nest” competition was organized to sensitize students to the importance of birds in maintaining biodiversity. Students enthusiastically participated by using natural nesting materials to create innovative bird nests, gaining hands-on understanding of avian habitat requirements and conservation.

Meanwhile, at GSSS Campbell Bay, students took part in a bird-watching and ecological walk at the 10 km Camp along the North–West Road. The programme included an orientation on the endemic bird species of Great Nicobar Island, practical training in bird-watching techniques, and an interactive session focusing on the ecological significance of the endemic Nicobar Megapode.

The outreach activities aimed to foster environmental awareness and encourage young students to appreciate and conserve the rich avian diversity of the Nicobar Islands.

According to a press release issued by the Divisional Forest Officer (Nicobar Division), these pre-event programmes form an integral part of efforts to promote community participation and awareness ahead of the First Island Bird Festival–2026.
