The Pre-Marital Communication Center (PMCC), an initiative of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Capacity Building Cell, was inaugurated on Wednesday at Andaman Law College, marking a significant step towards promoting informed and healthy marital relationships among young adults. The center, established with the tagline “Tere Mere Sapne”, is the 64th PMCC in the country and the first of its kind in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory.
The PMCC was inaugurated by Mr. Ravinder Kumar, Director, Directorate of Social Welfare, A&N Islands UT, in the presence of students, faculty members, and staff of Andaman Law College. He was received and welcomed by the Principal of the college, Dr. P.V.N. Sarma, along with faculty members.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ravinder Kumar emphasized that the absence of adequate pre-marital preparation often leads to marital discord, dissatisfaction, and mistrust, which in turn contributes to rising cases of domestic violence, abuse, and divorce among young couples. He underscored the importance of deliberation, discussion, and informed decision-making before marriage, stating that the PMCC would serve as a platform to facilitate such meaningful engagement among prospective partners.
In his address, Dr. P.V.N. Sarma highlighted that the core objective of the PMCC is to help individuals understand that if marriage is a choice, it should be an informed one. He expressed gratitude to the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Mrs. Vijaya Rahatkar, for placing confidence in Andaman Law College and sanctioning the PMCC. He recalled her recent visit to the Free Legal Aid Services Clinic run by the District Legal Services Authority in association with the college, noting that her appreciation of the clinic’s functioning played a key role in the approval of the center.
Under the mentorship of NCW, the PMCC will have a designated counsellor or facilitator who will undergo specialized training at NCW, New Delhi.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Director of Physical Education Dr. Rajiv Mondal, Assistant Professors Ms. Alqama, Ms. T. Varsha, Ms. Akshaya R.S., Mr. Md. Asif Belal Ansari, and Mr. Rohit Sharma, along with Accounts Officer Mr. Jawahar Lal Mondal and Librarian Mr. Shashi Bhushan Prasad.
