President of India Visits Cellular Jail; Attends Civic Reception Hosted in her Honour

Hon’ble President of India, Smti. Droupadi Murmu, reached Port Blair on 19th February 2024, on a significant five-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In her inaugural engagement upon arrival at Port Blair, the President paid homage to the valiant souls who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom struggle by laying a wreath at the Martyr’s Column. Following this solemn tribute, she embarked on a poignant tour of the historic Cellular Jail Complex and Museum, bearing witness to the tumultuous chapters of India’s colonial past. The visit culminated with an immersive experience at the Cellular Jail’s renowned light and sound show, resonating with the echoes of the region’s rich history.

A momentous civic reception awaited the President, hosted by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration at the esteemed Dr BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology. Addressing the gathered dignitaries and residents, President Murmu underscored the strategic significance of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She reiterated Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ integral position in India’s Act East Policy.

Extolling the natural allure of the archipelago, the President highlighted the burgeoning tourism sector and the steps undertaken to augment it further. Noteworthy developments such as the inauguration of a new terminal at Veer Savarkar Airport have bolstered the region’s appeal to global tourists, with visitation rates witnessing a substantial surge in recent years.

President Murmu articulated the vast potential of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surrounding the islands, comprising a significant portion of India’s maritime territory. She lauded ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing the blue economy, particularly the promotion of fisheries and marine exports, envisaging a vital contribution to India’s economic growth trajectory.

However, amidst aspirations of progress, the President underscored the importance of preserving clean environment and ecology. Stressing the need for sustainable practices, she reiterated the importance of maintaining a balance between development and environment protection.

As her visit unfolds, President Murmu’s profound insights and visionary outlook resonate with the islanders, reaffirming the enduring bond between the mainland and this idyllic union territory, poised on the cusp of progress and preservation.
