In a swift anti-drug operation, the Anti-Narcotics Police Station of South Andaman on 1st August 2025, apprehended a man allegedly carrying 850 grams of illicit ganja shortly after he arrived in Sri Vijaya Puram on an Air India Express flight.

The breakthrough came after police received credible intelligence input that a person arriving from the mainland was transporting ganja in his luggage with the intention to sell it locally. The tip-off was immediately relayed by Inspector Vikas Singh, SHO of the Anti-Narcotics Police Station, to Mr. M.K. Shukla, DANIPS, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotics), who swiftly ordered a raid and joined the operation personally.

Sub-Inspector Manoj Lal was assigned to lead the field team. A raiding team was quickly constituted, including ASI Surya Narayan, HC Laxman Rao, and Constable Somnath Prasad. Constables Ratan Das, M. Raja Rao, and Nandita Mistry — joined the team near the airport exit gate.

The suspect was identified near the airport’s auto stand, carrying a blue travel bag. He was intercepted by the police and informed of the nature of the search and his legal rights. In the presence of DySP Mr. Shukla, a search was conducted, and the bag was found to contain a transparent polythene packet concealed among personal belongings and vegetables.

The contents of the packet — dried leafy material with a strong odour — was tested on the spot using a drug detection kit and confirmed to be ganja. The contraband, weighing approximately 850 grams, was sealed and seized as per procedure. The entire process was witnessed and documented in the presence of the two independent witnesses.

A case under Section 20(b)(ii)(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, has been registered at PS Anti-Narcotics.
