In a swift response to a credible tip-off regarding wildlife crime, a team from the PS Central Crime Station, CID Unit, carried out a successful raid in Maymyo village, Wandoor, leading to the seizure of 20 kgs of venison (deer meat) on July 26, 2023.
The raiding team, comprised of SI Shaji Mathew, ASI Rajani Kullu, HC/264 Sanjay Kujur, HC/733 Sanjit Madhu, PC/1859 Chandran, PC/1067 N. Thangaraj, and PC/1143 K. Rajendran, acted upon the received information promptly. During the operation, they discovered the contraband venison concealed in packets near the residence of one Sanjay Das, aged 46 years, a private carpenter residing in Maymyo Village, Wandoor, South Andaman.
The seized venison was suspected to be intended for illegal sale, which led to the detention of the accused, Sanjay Das, under the provisions of Sections 50/51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
Following the successful operation, the confiscated venison, along with the detained accused, was handed over to the Range Officer of Manglutan Range on July 27, 2023, for further legal action.
The Police Department continues to work diligently round the clock and remains committed to preserving the rich biodiversity and safeguarding the flora and fauna of the region. Wildlife crimes pose a significant threat to the delicate ecological balance, and such enforcement actions play a vital role in protecting the natural heritage of the Andaman Islands.
