In a swift operation, the Ograbraj Police intercepted and apprehended a suspect involved in the illegal transportation of suspected venison on the evening of January 13, 2024.
Upon receiving credible information about the unlawful activity, a team from the Ograbraj Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Devanand Pathak, rushed to track down the offenders. The police team, comprising HC/1905 Ashok Kumar Roy, PC/1013 Biplob Das, PC/2458 Ramla Begum, and PC/2193 Sumitra Brahma, demonstrated immediate and agile actions that ultimately led to the successful interception of the suspected vehicle.
During the pursuit, the police team observed a person being dropped off along with a plastic sack near Sub-Centre, Chouldari. The team quickly followed the suspect, identified as Raj Kishore Malakar, 37 years old, residing in Chouldari, as he attempted to hide the sack behind the Sub-Center. Malakar was apprehended after a chase and subsequently confessed that the meat in the sack was venison, intended for sale at a lucrative price.
Officials from the Forest Range Office in Manglutan were immediately contacted, and the suspected venison, along with the sack, was seized on the spot. The confiscated meat, weighing approximately 26.725 kgs, was handed over to the forest officials. Raj Kishore Malakar was also handed over to the forest authorities for further necessary legal actions.
The entire operation was conducted under the supervision and guidance of Ms. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, SP, South Andaman District.
The police urge the general public to refrain from buying or consuming restricted wildlife products, emphasising that such activities are prohibited by law and pose a significant threat to biodiversity. Citizens are encouraged to share information related to crimes or illegal activities with the police at 112, 03192-232100, or 03192-236641. The identity of informants will be kept confidential.
