A recent surge in cyber-attacks has prompted authorities to issue a public advisory warning users about the dangers posed by malicious browser extensions. These attacks, utilising sophisticated social engineering tactics, have been specifically targeting users’ email accounts, with Gmail being a prime target.
The modus operandi involves the dissemination of phishing emails containing links to malicious browser extensions. These extensions are designed to exploit vulnerabilities in popular browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. Once installed, they can clandestinely access and pilfer the contents of Gmail messages, posing a severe threat to user privacy and security. Furthermore, there have been reported cases of these extensions infecting mobile devices, particularly Android phones.
In response to this alarming trend, the Andaman and Nicobar Police has issued a comprehensive advisory to help users safeguard themselves against such cyber threats. Here are the key recommendations:
1. Regularly Review Installed Browser Extensions: Users are advised to frequently audit their installed browser extensions to identify any suspicious ones and promptly remove them.
2. Exercise Caution with Email Attachments: Avoid installing any extension or software sent via email, especially from unknown sources.
3. Download from Trusted Sources: Only download browser extensions from reputable sources like the Chrome Web Store or Mozilla add-ons.
4. Exercise Caution with Unknown Emails: Refrain from opening emails from unknown senders and avoid downloading any attachments they may contain.
5. Beware of Suspicious Links: Exercise caution when clicking on links from suspicious emails or posts on message boards, as they could lead to compromised pages.
6. Enhance Smartphone Security: Install antivirus applications and enable Google Play Protect on smartphones to mitigate the risk of mobile infections.
7. Keep Software Updated: Ensure that all software, including browsers and security applications, are regularly updated to leverage the latest bug fixes and security patches.
