On 5th of January a signal was sent from 1st Captain of Afra Bay to the Deputy Commissioner of Nicobar District and Assistant Commissioner of Campbell Bay informing them of the sufferings being caused because of lack of supply of ration and about the lack of transportation facilities between Afra Bay and Campbell Bay.
The 1st Captain of Afra Bay had requested for providing speed boat on weekly basis and has informed the authorities that plying Engine Dinghy in rough weather is risky.
Nicobar Times has confirmed the news of shortage of ration items at Afra Bay from Shri. Barnabas, Chairman, Tribal Council of Great Nicobar and Little Nicobar who informed that the ration items are available at Campbell Bay and is stored in their community hall. He further added that there is no way to transport the ration items to Afra Bay as the speed boat is not available at Campbell Bay currently and plying of Engine Dinghy is very dangerous during the prevailing rough weather.
Nicobar Times tried reaching the Local Administration for a comment on the issue but couldn’t reach them as yesterday was a non-working day.
Sources have informed us that a speed boat was earlier stationed at Campbell Bay but had gone back because of some official formalities. The speed boat for Campbell Bay is said to have already sailed and has reached Car Nicobar yesterday. The prevailing rough weather is making it difficult for the Speed Boat to continue its journey and it is scheduled to sail for Campbell Bay as soon as the weather clears.
It is being speculated that the Local Administration will immediately depute the Speed Boat for Afra Bay and other outer areas of Great Nicobar and Little Nicobar after its arrival.
