The general public of Great Nicobar is now fed up with the road blockades by the fishermen community of Campbell Bay. The members of the fishermen community blocked the roads of Campbell Bay since 8 November 2021 to press for their demand of not letting a legally licensed longline fishing boat to operate.
Today the members of the fishermen community increased the number of blockades on the roads of Campbell Bay.
Some members of the general public as well as Ex-PRI members met the Assistant Commissioner today and demanded that the road blockades must be cleared to avoid inconvenience to the general public. The delegation explained to the Assistant Commissioner the problems being faced by the general public because of the road blockades by the members of the fishermen community.
The members of the Small Traders Association, Campbell Bay also met the Assistant Commissioner today and submitted a letter demanding police protection from the potential hooliganism by the members of the protesting fishermen community.
The members of the Small Traders Association informed the Assistant Commissioner that the protesting members of the fishermen community had requested them to close their shops in support of their protest and road blockades. They further informed that the shopkeepers are strictly against closing any shops in support of the fishermen community.
Overall the general public of Campbell Bay is fed up with the road blockades by the members of the fishermen community and many are demanding that the Administration take strict steps to remove all the road blockades.
Many people are also questioning the motive of the fishermen community behind organising such protests to stop a legally licensed longline fishing boat from operating.
Many people are not able to get to health centres, students are suffering as there are blockades at multiple points in Campbell Bay.
The protesting members of the fishermen community today also blocked the road in front of the Assistant Commissioners Office causing more inconvenience to the general public. The general public is also questioning the role of the police, which is letting these few hundred people hijack the normal life of the thousands of other peace-loving citizens of Great Nicobar.
The roads of Great Nicobar must be cleared immediately for the convenience of the general public and action should be taken against the protesting members of the fishermen community who are holding the convenience of the general public to ransom their demands from the Administration.
