Andaman and Nicobar Islands, known for their vulnerability to hydro-meteorological disasters, face the annual challenge of cyclones forming in the Andaman Sea and heavy monsoon rains causing localized flooding in low-lying areas. As the Southwest monsoon has already advanced into the region, the Directorate of Disaster Management of the A&N Administration has issued a call to action for residents to prepare for the imminent heavy rains, strong winds, and potential flooding.
The monsoon season can result in significant damage to buildings, property, and infrastructure. However, the impact can be mitigated with some essential precautions. The Directorate of Disaster Management has provided the following tips to help residents prepare:
1. Clear Gutters and Drains: Ensure gutters and drains are free of debris to prevent water logging.
2. Inspect Roofs: Check for any damage or leaks and make necessary repairs to avoid further issues during heavy rains.
3. Secure Outdoor Items: Store or tie down outdoor furniture, grills, and other items to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles in high winds.
4. Stock Emergency Supplies: Keep ample water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and other emergency supplies on hand in case of power outages or flooding.
5. Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather reports for updates on monsoon activity and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
By adhering to these precautions, the general public can help ensure safety and minimize damage during the monsoon season. The Directorate emphasizes the importance of preparedness in safeguarding lives and property against the adverse effects of severe weather conditions.
