The residents of Pulopanja Village of Little Nicobar Island face a lot of difficulties during the rainy season because of water logging in the residential areas of the village.
Pulopanja is a remote village in the Little Nicobar region. The Administrative Headquarters of Great Nicobar and Little Nicobar is Campbell Bay. Little Nicobar is a tribal village where Nicobari Tribals reside. The village has a small population and lacks even the basic of facilities.
Recently, one of the residents of Pulopanja contacted Nicobar Times and showed us a video of their water logged residential areas. Nicobari Tribals usually construct elevated houses and the permanent Tsunami Shelters allotted to them are also designed elevated from the ground. The video shows their residential area filled with thigh high water. Their houses because of being elevated remains safe but their coconut plantation can be seen inside water.
These tribal residents of Pulopanja has to face such a situation every time it rains heavily in the region.
Nicobar Times spoke to Mr. Barnabas, Chairman, Tribal Council of Great Nicobar and Little Nicobar to know the ground realities at Pulopanja. Mr. Barnabas informed us that the water logging is indeed an issue and the Tribal Council has brought the issue to the attention of the authorities but no action has been taken to mitigate the problem.
Mr. Barnabas has also informed Nicobar Times, that the problem of water logging is not just limited to Pulopanja but other villages of Little Nicobar Island are also affected. He also informed that the water logging is caused because of some issue of retaining wall.
The authorities of District Administration of Nicobar and the Local Administration at Great Nicobar should intervene and instruct the appropriate authorities to initiate the needful repair and construction of infrastructure to solve the problem of water logging in remote tribal villages of Little Nicobar.
