Sri Vijaya Puram, 06 June 2025
In a spirited celebration of World Environment Day 2025, the State Library in Sri Vijaya Puram came alive with colour, creativity, and consciousness as students from across the islands gathered for “Rang Utsav”—a painting and book reading competition centred on the theme “One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution.”
The event, held on June 5, was aimed at encouraging young minds to think critically and creatively about environmental challenges, especially the growing threat of plastic pollution.
Mr. L. Kumar, IAS, Secretary (Education), A&N Administration, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he underlined the urgent need to adopt sustainable practices and eco-friendly alternatives to combat plastic waste. Emphasizing the role of collective effort in protecting the planet, he also encouraged students to cultivate reading habits for personal growth and academic excellence, urging them to make optimal use of library resources.
Also present were Mr. Vikram Singh, Director (Education), Mr. Mohan Yadav, Director (Civil Supplies), Ms. Niharika Bhatt, Superintendent of Police, along with senior officials from the Education Department including Mr. Gyan Sheel Dubey (HoO/Academic) and Ms. Archana Singh, Deputy Director of Education (Planning).
More than 300 students, spanning primary, middle, and secondary levels, participated enthusiastically in the competitions. Notably, over 25 divyang (specially-abled) students also took part, making the event truly inclusive. The Book Reading Competition tested participants on comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity, while promoting a deeper appreciation for reading and environmental responsibility.
Support for the event came from various NGOs and community groups. CPREEC, Dakshin Foundation, Guru Ki Rasoi, and the Inner Wheel Club generously contributed prizes for participants. Winners across categories were felicitated with certificates and awards.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Ram Parvesh, Deputy Director of Education (Science), who acknowledged the contributions of all stakeholders and praised the students for their spirited participation.
