In a swift operation, the Rangat police apprehended a man in possession of methamphetamine on September 1, 2024. The accused, identified as Sanjeev Kumar Halder (42), a resident of Bhatubasti, Port Blair, currently residing in Rangat, was caught near a transformer in Janakpur, Rangat, after a tip-off from a reliable source.
At around 3:05 PM, police received credible information that Halder was attempting to sell illicit drugs in the area. Acting promptly, Mr. Rahul L Nair, IPS, SDPO of Rangat, directed the formation of a raiding team. The team, led by SI Madhab Halder, SHO of PS Rangat, included SI Abdul Sajeed, PC Samir, PC Yashwant Rao, and LPC Sumitra Halder. They were also accompanied by Miss A.P. Nasreen, a senior scientific assistant and scene of crime officer, equipped with a drug detection kit.
On their way to the location, the team enlisted two local residents as independent witnesses. Upon arrival, the police team concealed themselves in the nearby bushes, waiting for the informer’s signal. Once signalled, the team swiftly intercepted Halder.
After confirming his identity, Halder was informed of his legal rights under Section 50 of the NDPS Act, which he acknowledged. A thorough search of Halder’s person revealed a transparent polythene bag containing a suspicious substance, later identified as methamphetamine, weighing approximately 10 grams. The substance was tested and confirmed by Miss Nasreen using the drug detection kit.
The recovered methamphetamine was seized and sealed at the scene. Following the discovery of the drug, Halder was arrested at 5:45 PM under Section 22(b) of the NDPS Act, 1985. His wife was informed of his arrest.
