Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar, a retired Government Doctor from Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be conferred with ‘Padma Shri’ by the President of India. Padma Awards – one of the Highest Civilian Awards of the Country are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day.
The awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhavan usually around March/April every year.
For the year 2023, the President has approved the conferment of 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one).
Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar is one of the awardees for the ‘Padma Shri’ Award for the year 2023. The achievements of Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar are exceptional.
Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar treated Jarawas during the Measles Epidemic of 1999 & brought them back from the verge of extinction. He contributed to the increase in the Jarawa Population from 76 to 270.
Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar also closely observed & documented Jarawa Culture and tradition in his book titled ‘Andamaner Adim Janajati Jarawa’.
Dr. Ratan Chandra Kar being announced as one of the awardees for the ‘Padma Shri’ Award has made all Islanders proud.
