In a significant stride towards sustainable infrastructure and improved working conditions for frontline personnel, the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Admiral D. K. Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), inaugurated solar power installations at five remote Look Out Posts (LOPs) of the Andaman & Nicobar Police on Tuesday (03rd June 2025). The ceremony took place in the presence of Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, and Mr. Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal, IPS, Director General of Police, A&N Islands.
The LOPs—Narcondum Island, East Island, Burma Nallah, Interview Island, and Luis-in-Let Bay—previously operated in severe power-deficient conditions, relying solely on diesel generator sets that could function only 2 to 3 hours a day. This limited energy availability hampered daily operations, affected the functioning of basic amenities like lights, fans, and water pumps, and created difficulties in charging communication equipment.
Police personnel deployed in these isolated outposts faced extremely harsh conditions, particularly during summer and monsoon months, dealing with high heat, humidity, and mosquito infestations without reliable power support.
With the commissioning of the new solar energy systems, these LOPs now have uninterrupted, round-the-clock electricity. The transformation has significantly improved operational capabilities by enabling continuous use of vital appliances, enhancing night-time visibility, and boosting communication systems. Personnel welfare has also seen a marked improvement with better living conditions.
The adoption of solar energy has drastically reduced dependence on diesel generators, cutting fuel consumption and advancing the Administration’s commitment to environmentally responsible governance. This move aligns with the Union Territory’s broader vision of promoting renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure, especially in geographically challenging areas.
This milestone underscores the Andaman & Nicobar Police’s dedication to both national security and environmental sustainability while strengthening the morale and efficiency of forces stationed in some of the country’s most remote regions.
Authorities have urged the general public to support policing efforts by reporting any information related to criminal or illegal activities to the nearest police station or through helpline numbers 100, 112, and 03192-273344. The identity of informants will be kept confidential and they will be suitably rewarded. (Story Based on PR)
