In order to ensure road safety & to avert accidents, Andaman & Nicobar Traffic Police is regularly conducting traffic checking at different locations of Port Blair city. The checking by Traffic Police is aimed to curb the violations of drunken driving/over speeding/rash and negligent driving, and various other traffic violations.
So far in 2023, a total of 2592 MV Challans have been imposed against traffic violators and Rs.16,77,000/- (Rupees Sixteen lakh seventy seven thousand only) has been collected as fine amount.
Special emphasis was given on preventing drunken driving & rash/negligent driving. Total 309 persons were booked for drunken driving & 07 persons were booked for rash & negligent driving and their driving licenses were also seized along-with their vehicle. In addition, a special drive against abandoned vehicles was also conducted and 23 vehicles have been removed from various parts of Port Blair city till date in 2023.
In order to promote Road Safety, 21 road safety awareness programmes were conducted this year at various schools, offices & panchayats etc. Around 1000 participants participated in these awareness programmes. In addition, 03 meetings were conducted with commercial vehicle drivers & union leaders. Around 250 drivers attended the meetings and they were also sensitised on traffic rules and regulations.
The general public has been has been asked to report traffic violations such as mobile phone use while driving, use of multi-tone horn, excess smoke emission, illegal/obstructive parking, retrofitted/modified silencers, rash & negligent driving etc. by sending clear photograph/short videos of violation containing clear Registration No. of vehicle with date, time and place of offence on the official Whatsapp No. 9531892228.
