The Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan (RGPRS), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, conducted an awareness programme on the Gram Swaraj Yatra at the Wimberlygunj Community Hall recently. The event was held under the leadership of Mr. O. Bashir, Chairman of RGPRS in the islands.
The programme saw the participation of several senior Congress leaders, including Mr. Rangalal Halder, President of ANTCC, Mr. T.S.G. Bhasker, Chairman of the Campaign Committee (ANTCC), Ms. Zubaida Begum, President of Mahila Congress, Mr. John Robert Babu, District President, Mr. Mohd. Zubair, President of City Congress, Mr. K.P. Usman, State President of INTUC Federation, Mr. Mohd. Rafiq, General Secretary of INTUC, Mr. M.A. Sajid, Vice President of Youth Congress, and Mr. Tejeswara Rao, Chairman of UWEC. PRI members, Congress workers, and residents from across South Andaman were also present.
Addressing the gathering, speakers highlighted the concept of Gram Swaraj, inspired by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and stressed the importance of empowering Panchayati Raj Institutions to strengthen grassroots governance. Discussions centred around public involvement in decision-making, rural development initiatives, community participation, and social upliftment at the village level.
The leaders collectively appealed to citizens to engage actively in the S.I.R process and uphold democratic values. They emphasized that meaningful participation at the grassroots is key to ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective implementation of development programmes. (Story Based on PR)
