A road sliding occurred on the evening of 26th November 2024 in Kakana Jungle, located on Kamorta Island, disrupting the only road link between the villages of Kakana and Pilpillow to the rest of the island. The landslide rendered the road impassable for four-wheel vehicles, causing significant concerns among the local community.
The road serves as the sole connection for the residents of Kakana and Pilpillow to access essential services, including schools, markets, and healthcare facilities. The immediate disruption has left the local population facing major logistical challenges. In particular, students from the affected villages are now unable to reach their schools, raising concerns over their education.
Further compounding the issue, the transportation of essential goods, including rations and other supplies, is also impacted. This disruption threatens the availability of basic necessities for the villagers, creating a potential crisis if the road is not repaired soon.
Mr. Aslam Majid, First Captain of Kamorta, spoke to Nicobar Times about the dire situation, emphasising that the road is the only lifeline for both Kakana and Pilpillow. “The road is the only link for the villages of both Kakana and Pilpillow to the rest of Kamorta Island. If not repaired immediately, the disruption will make daily life extremely difficult for our residents,” he said.
Mr. Majid has urgently appealed to the administration to prioritise repairs to the road, stressing that swift action is crucial to avoid further hardships for the affected communities.
As the community anxiously awaits repairs, local authorities are under pressure to restore the vital road as soon as possible to mitigate the growing challenges faced by residents.
