In a major step towards strengthening water infrastructure in South Andaman, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has approved a Rs. 3.49 crore project to augment water supply to the Wimberlygunj area.

The project involves laying a new pumping line from New Kalatang to Wimberlygunj, aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the region’s water distribution network.

According to officials, the existing Galvanized Iron (GI) pipeline—prone to frequent bursts and high maintenance costs—will be replaced with a modern three-layer Polypropylene Random Copolymer (PPR) pipeline. The upgraded pipeline is expected to offer enhanced durability, reduced leakages, and lower operational challenges.

The initiative will stabilize the crucial water supply link between the Kalatang and Wright Myo pump houses, thereby strengthening the overall distribution system. Besides Wimberlygunj, residents of Wright Myo, Mannarghat, and Nayapuram are also expected to benefit from the improved infrastructure.

As part of the upgrade, high-specification Cast Iron (CI) double-acting air valves and flanged valves will be installed to optimize pressure management and increase the longevity of the system.

Once completed, the project is expected to eliminate recurring water supply disruptions caused by the aging pipeline network and ensure a seamless and reliable water supply to over 7,821 residents. Officials described the project as a significant milestone towards ensuring long-term sustainability of water resources in the region.
