The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has accorded administrative approval and expenditure sanction of ₹4.19 crore for the upgradation of the rural road connecting Champin Jetty to Tapong village in the Nancowry group of islands.

The 4.68-km road serves as the main land route linking interior settlements of Tapong with Champin Jetty. The road, constructed in 2018, has repeatedly suffered damage during monsoon seasons due to waterlogging and inadequate drainage, affecting vehicular movement for extended periods each year.

According to official details, the approved project includes construction of seven RCC culverts to regulate natural water flow, installation of approximately 2,800 metres of side drains to address water stagnation, and other civil works designed to improve durability in the island’s high-rainfall conditions. The project goes beyond routine resurfacing and is intended to address long-standing structural issues affecting the road.

The demand for improving the road has been raised by the local Tribal Council and residents, as the stretch is used by nearly 1,300 people for access to transport, healthcare, education and movement of local produce. Disruptions to the road during monsoons have often limited connectivity between the village and the jetty.

The work will be executed by the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) and is expected to commence shortly. Officials stated that the road is planned to be made functional before the onset of the peak monsoon season.
