Mr. S Sahul Hameed, Councillor of Ward No. 1, has been elected as the Chairperson of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) for the fourth year of the council’s term. The election was held on 24th April 2025.
Contesting as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) nominee, Mr. Hameed received support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had publicly declared its endorsement of the TDP candidate for the Chairperson post.
In the 24-member council, Mr. Hameed secured 15 votes, comfortably surpassing the majority mark. His victory, however, has raised eyebrows within political circles due to the arithmetic of party-wise strength in the council.
The BJP and TDP collectively hold 12 seats—10 and 2 respectively—while the Congress has 10 Councillors, and the DMK and an Independent each have one. The tally suggests that at least one Congress Councillor may have cross-voted in favour of Mr. Hameed, pointing to possible internal dissent or shifting loyalties within the opposition.
Mr. Hameed’s election is being seen as a strategic win for the TDP-BJP alliance and a reflection of his ability to navigate the complex political landscape of the municipal body.
