The Department of Fisheries, in collaboration with Dakshin Foundation and Andaman Nicobar Environment Team (ANET), orchestrated a groundbreaking event, the Sagar Mela, on December 1st, 2023, at Wandoor. This outreach initiative, themed ‘Conservation of Fisheries Resources & Sustainable Development,’ marks a pioneering effort in A&N Islands.

The inauguration of the event was honored by Mr. Vikram Singh, Director of Fisheries, A & N Administration. Commending the dedication of Dakshin Foundation and ANET, the Director acknowledged their pivotal role in educating the fisherfolk on the sustainable utilization of fisheries resources.

Engaging various segments of the community, including women, children, fishermen, and local traders, the event unfolded at the Fish Landing Centre in Wandoor. Cultural presentations, such as a poignant drama highlighting the significance of safeguarding juvenile fish and advocating sustainable fishing practices, captured the audience’s attention.

Adding a flavourful touch to the occasion, a competition showcasing the preparation of seafood cuisine by women was organized. Complementing the cultural activities were games designed to instill a sense of marine resource conservation among the fisherfolk.

Ms. Madhuri Mondal, State Coordinator at Dakshin Foundation, played a pivotal role in coordinating the event, ensuring its success. Mr. Tapan Biswas, Assistant Director Fisheries, South Andaman, seized the opportunity to urge the fisherfolk to adopt a more responsible approach to prevent the depletion of vital fisheries resources.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Adhir Das, the Pradhan, conveyed his appreciation to the Director of Fisheries and urged the Department to host more such events in the future.

The Sagar Mela stands as a testament to collaborative efforts aimed at fostering a sustainable relationship between the community and its marine environment, setting a precedent for future endeavours in the realm of conservation and sustainable development in the A&N Islands.
