In a move aimed at promoting sports and healthy recreation among youth, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Zilla Parishad Member of Campbell Bay and Govind Nagar Constituency, inaugurated a newly developed volleyball court at Fishermen Colony, Ward No. 7, under Gram Panchayat Govind Nagar on September 8, 2025.

The court has been developed by Gram Panchayat Govind Nagar to encourage local youth to engage in sports and to deter them from substance abuse. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr. Venkat Rao, Pradhan of GP Govind Nagar, and Mr. Sanjay Ekka, Up-Pramukh of Panchayat Samiti Campbell Bay and Samiti Member of Govind Nagar Constituency.

Great Nicobar, being one of the remotest regions of the country, faces a severe shortage of sports facilities. The new volleyball court has been welcomed by the island’s youth, who have also urged leaders to create more such infrastructure across the island to promote a wider range of sports.

For several years, residents have been demanding the construction of a multipurpose hall in Campbell Bay for indoor games, as well as a swimming pool to nurture local swimming talent and prepare athletes for state, national, and even international competitions.

While the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs of the A&N Administration has shown renewed interest in promoting sports in recent times, substantial funding is still required to meet the growing demands of youth across the islands.
