The much-awaited SARTHINI Scheme, an initiative aimed at empowering women through skill development and self-reliance, was formally inaugurated on Saturday at Govindnagar Gram Panchayat, Swaraj Dweep.
The scheme focuses on providing Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) driving training classes exclusively for women, enabling them to gain livelihood opportunities while promoting safe and independent mobility.
The inaugural program drew enthusiastic participation from local women, panchayat representatives, and officials from the Transport Department and RSETI, State Bank of India. Designed to encourage women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, the scheme seeks to enhance employability in transport, tourism, logistics, and related sectors.
The event was graced by Mr. B. Binoy, Deputy Director, Department of Transport; Ms. Debjyani Sikder, Samiti Member, Shyamnagar Panchayat; Ms. Mamta Mondal, Up-Pradhan, Govindnagar Gram Panchayat; Mr. C. Raj, Director, RSETI; Mr. P. K. Ummer Farooq, Chief Manager, UTLBC; and Mr. Ravisankar, Chief Manager, Lead Bank.
Speaking on the occasion, dignitaries highlighted that SARTHINI is more than just a driving training initiative — it is a step towards women’s empowerment, gender equality, and economic inclusion in the islands. They expressed confidence that the scheme would create new avenues of income generation and strengthen women’s role in community development.
The program concluded with an orientation session for the first batch of trainees, who expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity. (Story Based on PR)
