The Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram, celebrated the birth anniversary of the legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, fondly known as the ‘Birdman of India,’ in a befitting manner on November 12, 2025.

As part of the celebration, a Bird Watching Programme was organized for school students to promote awareness about avian diversity and the importance of bird conservation. Selected students were taken to Chidiyatapu — a location famed for its rich avifauna — to observe and study birds in their natural habitat.

During the field visit, students were introduced to bird identification techniques and learned about the crucial role birds play in maintaining ecological balance. The nature walk proved both educational and exciting, with participants spotting a variety of bird species including the Hill Myna, Parrot, Kingfisher, Green Imperial Pigeon, Drongo, Dove, and Oriole, among others.

A feedback test was conducted on-site to evaluate the students’ learning and observation skills. Based on their performance, Kumari Saanvi Bhan of VKV Lamba Line secured the first prize, followed by Kumari Asma H of Sagritara School in second place, and Kumar T. Harshit of Nirmala Sr. Sec. School in third. Kumari M. Swetha of RGT Public Vidyalaya received a consolation prize.

The event effectively combined education with hands-on experience, inspiring young minds to appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of conserving avian species — a fitting tribute to Dr. Salim Ali’s enduring legacy.
