The Science Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram, celebrated the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer in a befitting manner by organizing a painting competition for school students on September 16, 2025. The event, held at the Centre’s auditorium, saw enthusiastic participation from students of various government and private schools in and around Sri Vijaya Puram.

The International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed worldwide to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol in September 1987, an agreement aimed at protecting the Earth from the harmful effects of ozone depletion. This year’s theme was “From Science to Global Action.”

Students were divided into two categories: Junior Group (Classes III–V) and Senior Group (Classes VI–VIII). In the Junior Group, S. Ritika of RGT Public Vidyalaya won first prize, followed by R. Diksha of Nirmala Sr. Sec. School (second), Subhojit of GPS Mazar Pahad (third), and C. Kashni (consolation).

In the Senior Group, Vaisali Krishnan of RGT Public Vidyalaya bagged the first prize, while B. Dharsini of Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Vinaya Krishnan of RGT Public Vidyalaya, and Edel Baxla of Nirmala Sr. Sec. School secured the second, third, and consolation prizes respectively.

The programme highlighted the importance of collective action in safeguarding the ozone layer, often described as the Earth’s protective shield, and encouraged students to adopt sustainable practices for a healthier planet.
