In celebration of the 69th Wildlife Week, the Science Centre Port Blair organised an educational and engaging program for school students recently, focusing on the theme of ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation.’

The event aimed to raise awareness among young minds about the importance of wildlife conservation and the rich biodiversity of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

As part of the program, students from various schools in and around Port Blair had the unique opportunity to explore the Science Centre and discover the diverse flora and fauna thriving in its natural habitat. Knowledgeable guides were on hand to provide in-depth explanations about the island’s unique and precious biodiversity, emphasising the need for its preservation.

One of the highlights of the event was the ‘Smell the Nature’ competition, which challenged the students to use their senses to connect with nature. This competition encouraged participants to identify various scents associated with different plants and animals, fostering a deeper connection to the natural world.

After an engaging competition, the winners were announced. A. Preethi from Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School claimed the first position, demonstrating an exceptional understanding of the scents of the nature. G. Shourya from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Lamba Line, secured the second position with his keen sense of smell, while D. Tanushri of Khalsa Public School earned the third position, displaying her impressive knowledge. K. Rajesh from Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Haddo, was honoured as the consolation prize winner, recognising his participation and enthusiasm.

The Science Centre Port Blair’s initiative to celebrate Wildlife Week by engaging students in activities that foster appreciation for wildlife and biodiversity is a significant step towards building a generation of conservationists. It reinforces the message that ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’ involve not only organisations but also individuals, particularly the younger generation, who will play a crucial role in safeguarding our planet’s natural treasures.
