Acting on a tip-off from reliable sources, police officials in Swaraj Dweep conducted a raid that led to the arrest of a scuba diver in possession of illegal drugs. The individual, identified as a 34-year-old working for a local diving firm, was apprehended after authorities discovered hashish oil at his rented residence in Govind Nagar.
The raid was carried out by a team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Mr. Firoj Alam (DANIPS), following credible information about the individual’s involvement in illicit activities. According to the FIR, the accused was found with several small bottles containing hashish oil, a contraband substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
How the Arrest Unfolded:
On the evening of 26th September, at around 8:50 PM, the police received information regarding the suspect’s possession of illegal substances. The tip was immediately relayed to SDPO Alam, who directed the formation of a raiding team and coordinated the operation. The raid took place near the Power House area of Govind Nagar, where the accused had rented a room.
At approximately 9:15 PM, a team of police officers arrived at the location. Independent witnesses were also present at the scene to ensure transparency in the search. The officers conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s residence, where they discovered eight small plastic bottles containing a suspicious fluid hidden inside a green and black bag.
Upon inspection, the liquid was identified as hashish oil using a drug detection kit, and the total weight of the recovered substance was found to be 24 grams. The police promptly seized the contraband, sealing it in an envelope after completing formalities in the presence of witnesses.
The accused was arrested on the spot at 11:00 PM for violating Section 20(b)(ii)(A) of the NDPS Act, which pertains to the possession of small quantities of prohibited substances. He was taken to the local police station along with the seized items, and the contraband was secured in the police station’s storage.
What is Hashish Oil?
Hashish oil, also known as hash oil, is a potent liquid extract derived from cannabis plants. It contains high concentrations of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound responsible for the drug’s effects. Hashish oil is often consumed for its stronger, more concentrated effects compared to other cannabis products, making it a valuable and illegal substance in many parts of the world, including India. Its possession, sale, and distribution are strictly prohibited under the NDPS Act.
This arrest highlights the police’s efforts to crack down on drug-related offences in the region, ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
