In a continued effort to promote gender equality and awareness among youth, the State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW) under the Directorate of Social Welfare recently organized an awareness programme on Gender Sensitization at Government Secondary School, Junglighat.
The session aimed to educate teenagers about gender concepts and to challenge stereotypes associated with gender roles. Ms. P. Deepa Laxmi, Gender Specialist at SHEW, addressed the students on critical topics such as child marriage, the distinctions between sex and gender, and the importance of creating an inclusive environment for individuals belonging to the third gender.
Further enriching the discussion, Ms. Hemlatha, also a Gender Specialist with SHEW, highlighted the key provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and spoke about entrenched gender stereotypes and traditional gender roles. She emphasized the need for integrating gender sensitization into educational curricula to help foster values of equality, dignity, and mutual respect from an early age.
The programme witnessed active participation and engagement from the students and school staff, marking a meaningful step towards nurturing a more inclusive and aware future generation.
