As the General Election to Lok Sabha 2024 approaches, the A&N Islands witnessed a proactive engagement towards democratic participation through a Signature Campaign themed ‘Wall of Democracy’ held at the A&N Secretariat premises on March 12, 2024. The initiative, part of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program, aimed to foster informed and ethical voting practices while instilling a sense of responsible democratic consciousness among both the staff and the general public.
The Chief Electoral Officer of ANIPC, Mr. B.S. Jaglan, IAS, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, inaugurating the Signature Campaign amidst an atmosphere of civic enthusiasm.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Jaglan emphasized the significance of every citizen’s role in the electoral process, urging all to take a solemn pledge to ‘Vote for Sure’. He underscored the essence of ‘Matdata Parv’, asserting it as a festival of the nation that demands enthusiastic participation, particularly in the upcoming General Election. Encouraging the Secretariat staff to prioritise voting on the polling day and motivate eligible family members to do the same, he emphasised the importance of active engagement in the electoral process.
The Signature Campaign witnessed a robust participation from officials and staff of the Secretariat who affixed their signatures, symbolising their commitment to the nation and their readiness to exercise their voting rights.
Mr. Wairokpam Punshiba Singh, IAS, Nodal Officer for SVEEP, extended a warm welcome to the chief guest and all attendees, highlighting the ongoing SVEEP activities aimed at maximising awareness and participation in the electoral process leading up to the General Election-2024.
As part of the event, an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) demonstration was conducted to familiarise voters with the voting process, ensuring readiness for the impending election day.
With the elections drawing nearer, the Election Department has intensified its efforts under SVEEP, organising various awareness programs and hands-on activities to engage residents, acquaint them with their electoral rights, and familiarise them with the process of registration and voting.
The Signature Campaign not only served as a symbolic gesture of democratic commitment but also as a rallying call for active participation in shaping the democratic future of the country.
