The Directorate of Social Welfare, Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Administration organized an informative awareness program on the harmful effects of alcohol and drug abuse under the banner of the *Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan* (NMBA). The initiative, aimed at staff members of the Child Helpline (CHL) and Women Helpline (WHL), sought to educate participants on the growing issue of substance abuse and their crucial role in combating it within the community.
The program featured a comprehensive session led by Ms. Anchamma, Project Assistant under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). She highlighted the significance of community involvement in reducing drug demand, urging the helpline staff to take an active role in spreading awareness and providing support to those affected by addiction. Ms. Anchamma emphasized that grassroots efforts are key in the fight against substance abuse, reminding participants that they are instrumental in shaping a healthier, drug-free environment.
The session concluded with a renewed commitment from attendees to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the NMBA, focusing on prevention and education within their respective communities.
Dr. Nitin Shakya, Director of the Directorate of Social Welfare, shared his concerns about the growing prevalence of drug abuse in the region, warning of its far-reaching consequences. “Drug abuse is not just an individual problem; it affects families, communities, and society as a whole,” he said. Dr. Shakya stressed the urgent need for holistic approaches that prioritize not only rehabilitation but also prevention and awareness campaigns.
“When a person falls victim to addiction, it’s not just their life that’s at stake. The ripple effects are felt throughout their family, their community, and the entire society,” he added, urging continued support for programs like NMBA that address both the social and personal impacts of substance abuse.
The Directorate’s initiative is part of a broader effort by the A&N Administration to tackle the issue of drug addiction and foster a drug-free society through education, intervention, and community action.
