In response to a surge in reported cases of house thefts and break-ins, the South Andaman District Police has issued a comprehensive advisory to the public, outlining key crime prevention tips aimed at curbing the increasing incidents of residential burglaries.
The advisory stresses the importance of proactive measures to enhance home security, with the following recommendations:
1. Installation of CCTVs:
– Homeowners are urged to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems both indoors and at strategic outdoor locations. The visual deterrent effect of CCTVs can discourage potential intruders.
– Emphasis is placed on ensuring the proper functioning of CCTVs and the maintenance of a minimum 30-day storage capacity for recorded footage.
2. Outdoor Lighting:
– Adequate outdoor lighting is highlighted as a crucial element in deterring criminal activities. Well-lit properties during the night reduce the likelihood of unauthorised entries.
3. Landscaping Maintenance:
– Homeowners are advised to keep landscaping elements such as bushes, trees, and other vegetation near windows and entry points well-trimmed. This minimises potential hiding spots for intruders.
4. Securing Valuables:
– Valuables, including jewellery and electronics, should be kept out of sight from windows and doors to reduce the temptation for burglars.
5. Secure Doors and Windows:
– Residents are reminded to lock all doors and windows when leaving their homes. Additionally neighbours should be informed to keep an eye on the property.
6. Social Media Caution:
– Homeowners are cautioned against posting vacation plans or any information on social media that could indicate their absence from home, as this may attract potential burglars.
The South Andaman District Police emphasises that the combination of visible deterrents and well-thought-out security measures significantly contributes to a more secure home environment, particularly during nighttime hours.
General public is urged to share any information related to crimes or illegal activities with the Police through the following contact points: 112, 03192-232100, 03192-236641 & 03192-232400. The identity of the informant will be kept confidential.
