Southernmost Revenue Village of India Connected by BSNL’s FTTH Broadband Service by Local Island Youths; Innovation of Local Island Youths Lauded by General Public

Campbell Bay, 10 Mar 2021

Great Nicobar Island of Nicobar District is the Southernmost Landmass of India. The famous Indira Point is located at the Great Nicobar Island. Last year the Govt. of India launched the CANI Submarine OFC which connects Chennai and different Islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and provides high speed telecommunication services to the Islanders.

The telecom services in Great Nicobar has improved after the CANI Submarine OFC was commissioned. Even after the launch of the CANI Submarine OFC Services BSNL couldn’t provide FTTH Broadband Services and High Speed Mobile Data services in the remote areas of Great Nicobar Island such as Laxmi Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Shastri Nagar Villages.

These revenue villages were not provided better telecom connectivity because of its distance from Campbell Bay which increased the cost of providing such services in these villages. The economic viability of providing such services also did not favour laying of OFC to such villages.

The villagers of Laxmi Nagar, Gandhi Nagar and Shastri Nagar often suffered because of sub-standard telecom services. Recently they also protested at Gandhi Nagar for better mobile communication services.

FTTH Broadband Services have become the lifeline of Great Nicobar lately and the majority of villagers of Laxmi Nagar Gram Panchayat were deprived of the services.

Arun Cable Network one of the partners of BSNL in Campbell Bay for providing FTTH Internet Connection has now connected the Southernmost Revenue Village of India, Shastri Nagar Village with BSNL’s FTTH Broadband Connection. Mr. Rakesh Tirkey a local of Gandhi Nagar Village of Great Nicobar Island and Proprietor of Multi-Tech Solution the technical partner of Arun Cable Network was the driving force behind introduction of high speed broadband services in Shastri Nagar Village.

BSNL’s FTTH Broadband Internet Connection at Shastri Nagar village is all possible because of the innovation and risk taking ability of the local entrepreneurs Mr. P Kanak Sundaram, Proprietor, Arun Cable Network and Mr. Rakesh Tirkey.

The connection to Shastri Nagar Village for providing FTTH Broadband Connection has been established over Air Fiber PTP and not on conventional physical OFC network which has reduced the cost significantly and provides equally reliable services to the residents of the region.

As per the information currently Arun Cable Network has about 25 requests for connection from Shastri Nagar and Gandhi Nagar Villages and more people are requesting them each day for FTTH Broadband Connections.

Providing FTTH Broadband connections in the Southernmost Revenue Village of Great Nicobar is a major achievement and these local youths of Great Nicobar Island must be lauded for it.
