Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has raised serious concerns over the rearing of pigs within city limits, including residential areas, following multiple complaints from residents about nuisance, traffic obstructions, and public health risks.

Areas most affected by stray pigs have been identified as Delanipur, Prem Nagar, Goal Ghar, Middle Point, Junglighat, Phoenix Bay, Buniayadabad, and Brookshabad. Residents of these localities have reported unhygienic conditions, foul odours, damage to public property, and potential health hazards caused by pigs roaming freely in public spaces.

According to the Council, the rearing of pigs within municipal limits violates existing Municipal Bye-Laws and poses significant health risks. Pigs are known carriers of pathogens and parasites that can infect humans, including swine flu, leptospirosis, and tapeworm infections. Their proximity to open drains and garbage sites can contribute to the spread of mosquitoes, flies, and other disease vectors, increasing the risk of epidemics such as dengue, malaria, and diarrhoeal diseases. Accumulation of waste from pig sheds further contaminates the local environment.

Stray pigs also create traffic hazards, often causing accidents, congestion, and damage to civic infrastructure. The Council emphasized that such practices negatively impact the quality of life for residents and hinder efforts to maintain a clean and healthy city.

In response, the Municipal Council has issued strict instructions for immediate compliance:

  • All pig sheds, pens, or enclosures within residential areas or municipal limits must be removed or relocated to the designated pig shed at Brookshabad within three days from the date of this release.
  • Pig owners must ensure that their animals do not stray onto public roads, drains, footpaths, vacant plots, or neighbouring premises.

The Council warned that non-compliance will lead to the capture and relocation of pigs to the designated sheds at the risk and cost of the owners. Authorities will not be liable for any loss or damage to animals during such operations. Violations may also invite action under the Municipal Bye-Laws and other applicable legal provisions.

The Council urged residents to cooperate fully and provide information about pig owners in the city, emphasizing that civic responsibility rests with both authorities and the community.

This initiative aims to safeguard public health, ensure traffic safety, and maintain a clean, liveable city for all residents. (Story Based on PR)
