A popular evening destination for many Port Blairians, the Marina Area Walkway, known for its refreshing sea breeze and stunning ocean views, is now facing a significant public health concern. Recent construction has led to the accumulation of stagnant water, creating a potential mosquito breeding ground.
Since its construction, the walkway has been a favourite spot for both residents and tourists. Evenings see the benches fully occupied as people enjoy the serene ambience. The food trucks lining the walkway add to the appeal, offering a variety of snacks to enjoy while taking in the coastal scenery.
However, recent structural changes have raised concerns. Authorities recently constructed concrete (CC) structures at the road end of the stairways between the light poles and benches. This new construction has inadvertently created open chambers that are now filled with stagnant water due to the monsoon rains.
Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can pose serious health risks to the community. If the issue is not addressed promptly, the Marina Walkway could become un-walkable and a potential health hazard for both residents and visitors.
Local residents are urging the authorities to take immediate action to drain the water and prevent further accumulation. Addressing this issue swiftly is essential to maintaining the walkway as a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
