As part of the Celebration of Innovation Month and to commemorate 10 years of Startup India, the Directorate of Industries, in association with higher education institutions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has organised a Startup Hackathon & Pitching Competition at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Industries. The event commenced on January 30, 2026.

The hackathon invited innovative ideas and practical solutions from students of higher education institutions to address key issues faced by the Union Territory. The initiative received an overwhelming response, with enthusiastic participation from students of Pondicherry University–Andaman Campus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Tagore Government College of Education, Andaman College (ANCOL) and Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya.

The event was conceptualised under the guidance of Mr. Atul Soni, Director of Industries, A&N Administration. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ajit Anand, Deputy Director, welcomed the dignitaries and participants and highlighted the growing trend of students venturing into startups. He encouraged participants to think out of the box, noting that many globally recognised products and services began as simple innovations nurtured by young minds.

During the programme, Mr. Ummer Farooque, Chief Manager, UTLBC, apprised the students about the various forms of assistance available from banks for startups. Mr. E. Pratap, Deputy General Manager, NABARD, described startup creation as a challenging yet rewarding journey for entrepreneurs committed to transforming ideas into viable ventures. Mr. Vijay Kumar, Senior Sanitary Inspector, SVPMC, motivated students to develop innovative solutions, particularly in the area of waste management.

The inaugural session was followed by the Startup Pitching Competition, during which students presented innovative solutions to problem statements such as a Tourist Navigation System, waste management at tourist spots, and improvements in public toilet facilities. Mr. Mohammed Islaque, Deputy Director, Directorate of Industries, delivered the vote of thanks and urged students to actively participate in the competition.

The valedictory function is scheduled to be held on January 31, 2026, during which the best ideas and solutions will be recognised and awarded.
