The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Administration, will conduct a State Level Mock Exercise (SLME) on August 30, 2024. The drill is designed to evaluate the readiness of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for potential disasters, specifically focusing on earthquake and tsunami scenarios. This exercise will involve the participation of Emergency Support Functionaries (ESFs), Incident Response Teams, and local communities.
According to Mr. Azharuddin Zahiruddin Quazi, IAS, Director (Disaster Management), this drill is a crucial step in enhancing the preparedness and coordination among emergency response teams in the region. “All residents and businesses are urged to remain calm and carry on with their regular activities, as this is a planned drill with no real threat to public safety,” he stated.
Key Activities of the Mock Exercise:
– Increased Emergency Presence: On the day of the drill, residents may notice a heightened presence of emergency vehicles, including Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles, fire tenders, ambulances, and other specialized units. These vehicles are part of the exercise and are not responding to actual emergencies.
– Simulated Scenarios: The exercise will simulate various disaster scenarios, including fires, medical emergencies, and other crisis situations. Sirens will be regularly sounded, accompanied by mock announcements and SMS alerts. These scenarios are carefully planned by the A&N Administration in coordination with the NDMA to ensure both safety and realism.
– Location and Timing: The exercise will take place at multiple locations across the South Andaman, North & Middle Andaman, and Nicobar districts. It is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM and conclude by 4:00 PM on August 30, 2024.
The general public has been advised not to be alarmed by the sights and sounds associated with the exercise. The drill is a controlled event, supervised by professional trainers and coordinators. Residents are encouraged to continue their daily routines without any special precautions or alterations to their plans.
To minimize disruption, people are requested to avoid the exercise areas if possible. Traffic delays may occur near the drill sites, and the cooperation of the public is sought in following any detours or instructions from traffic officers. In case of any unexpected changes or updates, information will be disseminated through local news channels and social media platforms.
This mock exercise is a critical component of the community’s disaster preparedness strategy. The support and cooperation of the residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are greatly appreciated as the region works together to enhance safety and security in the face of potential disasters.
