As part of the ongoing island-wide mass awareness campaign on Stray Dog Bite Prevention and Management, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services organised an awareness programme at Government Middle School, Rabindra Nagar (28 Km), in Little Andaman on December 23.

The programme was attended by 109 students and 13 staff members and was conducted in the presence of the Head of Institution, Ms. Kshiti Rani Biswas. During the session, participants were sensitised on safe behaviour around animals, recognising signs of aggression in dogs, and simple do’s and don’ts to prevent dog bites.

The students and staff were also educated on immediate first-aid measures in case of dog bites, including the importance of thorough wound washing with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, prompt reporting of incidents to the nearest health or veterinary facility, and the need for community participation in supporting the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme.

An interactive question-and-answer session formed a key highlight of the programme, with students actively raising queries and sharing practical concerns related to stray dog encounters.

The Department has informed that similar awareness programmes will be organised in more schools across North & Middle Andaman, South Andaman, and Nicobar districts in the coming days as part of the sustained campaign.
