Street Chess Initiative Draws Strong Response in Little Andaman

The Street Chess initiative continues to gain popularity in Little Andaman, drawing enthusiastic participation from chess lovers across age groups. The second Street Chess programme in the region was successfully organised on January 7, 2026, at R.K. Pur Bazaar, Little Andaman, by the Directorate of Education, with the support of PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary School, R.K. Pur, and the Gram Panchayat, R.K. Pur.

The open-air event witnessed active participation from players of all ages, who showcased their interest and skills in the game amid an enthusiastic local audience, adding vibrancy to the bazaar area.

The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Seuli Mondal, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat R.K. Pur, who made the ceremonial first move on the chessboard, formally marking the commencement of the event.

More than a recreational activity, the Street Chess initiative served as a platform to promote a positive, healthy, and intellectually stimulating environment in the community. The programme emphasised the values of discipline, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship among participants.

Earlier, a similar Street Chess programme was organised at Hut Bay Bazaar on January 6, 2026. The event was inaugurated by Mr. K. Rudhramoorthy, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Hut Bay, who made the ceremonial first move against Mr. Bidyut Roy, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Netaji Nagar, in the presence of Mr. Vijay Kumar, Up-Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Hut Bay.

Through these initiatives, the Directorate of Education aims to promote unity, encourage friendly competition, and foster a lasting interest in chess among people of all generations.
