Supreme Court Judges Lead Awareness Session on Drug Abuse, POCSO Act, and Mental Health in Swaraj Dweep

A significant awareness session focusing on drug abuse, suicide prevention, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and mental health issues was held on 23rd June 2025, at the Dolphin Conference Hall, Swaraj Dweep. The event aimed to foster dialogue and raise awareness on some of the most pressing social and legal challenges impacting vulnerable sections of society.

The session was graced by the presence of several eminent dignitaries from the Indian judiciary, including Hon’ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA); Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dipankar Datta, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Patron of the A&N State Legal Services Authority (SLSA); Hon’ble Mr. Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta and Patron-in-Chief of the A&N SLSA; and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya, Judge, High Court at Calcutta, Zonal Judge for A&N Islands and Executive Chairman of A&N SLSA.

The session underscored the need for coordinated efforts to address mental health challenges, combat the growing menace of drug abuse, and ensure the effective implementation of the POCSO Act for the protection of children. Participants deliberated on strategies to create a more supportive legal and social environment for those affected.

Mr. Bhawani Shanker Sharma, Registrar (Administration-II) of the High Court at Calcutta, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their commitment to the cause.
