Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) has reported a shortfall in potable water availability, warning that the situation may become more challenging in the coming days due to seasonal and operational constraints.

Stating that ensuring safe drinking water for every household remains its highest priority, the Municipal Administration has sought the cooperation of residents to conserve water so that essential needs such as drinking, cooking and basic domestic use can be met equitably across all 24 wards.

As a temporary but necessary measure, the Council has requested citizens to immediately refrain from non-essential use of potable water. This includes washing of cars, bikes and other vehicles; cleaning of premises, roads and compounds with hosepipes; watering of lawns, gardens and ornamental plants; and using drinking water for construction purposes, including curing works.

Residents have also been advised to reuse water from washing vegetables and utensils for secondary purposes such as cleaning or flushing, and to regularly check taps and pipelines to prevent leakages. The Council urged citizens to promptly report any water leaks to prevent wastage.

Officials emphasized that small conservation efforts, when practised collectively, can save significant quantities of water each day and help ensure that no household is left without basic supply.

The SVPMC has also appealed to hotels, commercial establishments, institutions and bulk consumers to adopt water-saving practices and utilize alternative sources, including reused or non-potable water, wherever feasible.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Council assured the public that multiple measures are being undertaken simultaneously to address the shortfall. These include improving distribution efficiency, controlling leakages and augmenting supply wherever possible. Regular updates will be shared with citizens regarding the situation.

Describing water as a shared resource and collective responsibility, the Council expressed confidence that with public cooperation, Sri Vijaya Puram will be able to overcome the present challenge.
