In a bid to curb water wastage and promote sustainable water management, the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) has launched a city-wide campaign titled “Stop the Leakage, Save Water.”

The initiative aims to reduce water loss in the distribution system, strengthen infrastructure, and create public awareness about the responsible use of water. With rising demand for potable water and the increasing need for sustainable resource management, the Council has identified water conservation as a key priority.

As part of the campaign, SVPMC, in coordination with the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), has constituted special inspection teams to carry out ward-wise checks of water supply pipelines within the municipal limits. The teams are tasked with identifying leakages, overflow points, and other issues in the distribution network. Immediate repair and maintenance works are being undertaken by the concerned sections to minimize unnecessary water loss and ensure equitable and reliable water supply to households.

The Council has also called for active public participation to make the campaign successful. Residents have been urged to regularly inspect their household plumbing systems, repair leaking taps and pipes, and prevent overflow from overhead tanks. Pamphlets detailing the dos and don’ts of water conservation are being distributed to raise awareness and encourage responsible water usage.

SVPMC has further advised citizens to install float valves in overhead tanks to automatically regulate water flow and prevent overflow, which can significantly reduce wastage.

Emphasizing that water conservation is a shared responsibility, the Council has appealed to residents, institutions, and commercial establishments to extend their full cooperation to build a water-secure and sustainable Sri Vijaya Puram.

Citizens have been requested to report any instances of water leakage, burst pipelines, overflow, or misuse within the municipal area to the Municipal Control Room at 231179. For complaints pertaining to rural areas, the public may contact the APWD Water Control Room at 251185 or the toll-free number 18003451666.

The Control Rooms are functioning round-the-clock, and timely information from the public will enable authorities to take swift action to prevent further water wastage.
