In a determined effort to combat the growing issue of drug abuse in the scenic paradise, the Swaraj Dweep Police has launched the “Drug-Free Tourism” initiative. The inauguration ceremony took place at the P.S. Swaraj Dweep on the 23rd of September 2023, marked by an awareness rally and an essay competition for students at GSSS Swaraj Dweep.
The event witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including Zilla Parishad Member, Pradhans of Shyam Nagar and Radha Nagar, and representatives from various government offices located on Swaraj Dweep. Also in attendance were managers and owners of hotels and resorts, members of the diving community, tour operators, taxi drivers, and auto-rickshaw drivers.
During the ceremony, SDPO Swaraj Dweep, Mr. Manasvi Vashistha, DANIPS, along with I/C PS Swaraj Dweep, SI Nixon Isaac, and SI Sumit Singh, elaborated on the goals and action plan of the “Drug-Free Tourism” initiative.
Mr. Vashistha highlighted the severe consequences of drug abuse, emphasising that it poses a grave threat to the very fabric of society. In response to this pressing issue, Swaraj Dweep Police will launch a comprehensive crackdown on drug dealers, including small-time peddlers.
As part of the initiative, banners conveying the dangers of drug abuse will be prominently displayed across the island, targeting both the local population and tourists. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the devastating effects of narcotics on individuals and communities.
Additionally, SDPO Manasvi Vashistha issued a directive to all representatives of hotels and resorts on the island. They were asked to prominently display a message within their premises, reading, “Consumption and possession of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances is prohibited. Violators shall be prosecuted as per law.”
