As part of the national campaign TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, a comprehensive tuberculosis screening drive was recently conducted in Chowra Island, targeting vulnerable populations to strengthen early detection and treatment in remote island communities.

The initiative was carried out under the direction of Mr. Amit Kale, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, and supervised by Dr. Anwar Moosa, District TB Officer. A dedicated medical team led by Dr. M.A. Tanzeer (Medical Officer, CHC Nancowry) and Dr. Priyanka Samuel (Medical Officer, PHC Teressa) undertook Active Case Finding (ACF) from August 6 to 10, 2025.

Covering the island’s entire population of 1,537, the team screened 421 vulnerable individuals and collected 45 CBNAAT samples for TB testing. In addition to screening, awareness sessions were organised to educate the community about TB prevention, early diagnosis, and the importance of completing treatment. The Tribal Secretary and Village Headman played an active role in encouraging residents to participate. Sick and bed-ridden patients were identified, treated, and assured of follow-up care.

A special health camp was also held on August 9 at the Health & Wellness Center, Chowra, where updated medicines were distributed, general health check-ups conducted, and treatments prescribed.

This coordinated effort reflects the Administration’s commitment to achieving a TB-free Nicobar through community participation, early intervention, and dedicated healthcare services. (Story Based on PR)
