Mrs. Selvi, Councillor, Ward No. 5, will be the next Chairperson of Port Blair Municipal Council. Elections were held for the Chairperson of Port Blair Municipal Council on 14th March 2023, and Mrs. Selvi secured 14 votes out of the total 24 Votes.
Mrs. Selvi was the joint candidate for BJP-TDP Alliance.
Mr. Vetrivelu, the INC-DMK Alliance candidate from Ward No. 20 secured 10 votes.
According to sources, Mrs. Selvi will be sworn in as the Chairperson of PBMC on the 16th of March 2023.
Mrs. Selvi was elected to PBMC as the councillor of Ward No. 5 from Telugu Desam Party. BJP had won 10 council seats, while INC-DMK alliance had won 11 council seats in the election held in March 2022.
BJP formed a post-poll alliance with TDP. TDP had won two council seats. The lone independent candidate who had won the council elections in 2022 also extended her support to BJP. BJP managed 13 votes in the last election for PBMC Chairperson, where Mrs. Kavitha Udhaya Kumar was elected.
However, 14 candidates voted in favour of Mrs. Selvi in the recently conducted elections for the post of Chairperson, PBMC, indicating that at least one candidate from the Congress-DMK Alliance has voted in favour of the BJP-TDP Alliance candidate.
