Three-Day Online Training on Crop Practices Begins for Agriculture Officials in A&N Islands

A three-day online training programme titled ‘Package of Practices of Major Crops for Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ commenced on 2nd December 2025, for officers and officials of the Department of Agriculture, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, including ATMA functionaries across all zones. The training, organised by ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram, will continue till December 4.

Inaugurating the programme, Ms. Sreedevi, Joint Director (Agriculture), appreciated ICAR–CIARI for its continued support in capacity-building and agricultural development in the Islands. She highlighted the need to adopt advanced and location-specific production technologies suited to the fragile Island ecosystem and encouraged participants to make full use of the technical sessions.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jai Sundar, Director, ICAR–CIARI, stressed the importance of strengthening research–extension linkages to ensure that scientific advancements effectively reach the farming community. He also emphasized the need for disseminating practical and need-based knowledge to improve crop productivity across the Islands.

During the three-day programme, subject experts will conduct sessions on a range of topics including improved production technologies for paddy, pulses, fruits, spices, and vegetables, integrated nutrient and water management, crop diversification, protected cultivation systems, crop management practices, and integrated pest and disease management.

A total of 89 Agriculture Department officials are participating in the training programme.
